Outcome of Ministerial Review

Dear parents/caregivers,

In late 2018 a review was held into the social, economic and educational needs of future secondary education in Whyalla. The review included consultation with key groups, schools and considered a significant amount of views from the broader community. The review has now finished and as a result, Edward John Eyre High, Stuart High and Whyalla High will be amalgamated into the new 7-12 government school that will be built in Whyalla Norrie, ready for students to start in term 1 of 2022.

One brand new state-of-the-art school for Whyalla students within an education precinct will provide the educational opportunities that Whyalla’s students deserve. The new school will have world-class learning and teaching areas with the best and most modern technology. Its location next to the UniSA and TAFESA will provide career pathways for students before they finish school, so they are ready to take on the next chapter in their life. A modern school will give students the opportunity to learn skills in innovation, advanced technology and study in areas that have strong links to the local industry.

The Department for Education will be working closely with the three high schools to ensure that the needs of the school community are factored into the new school. This will include things like traffic and transport management, special education needs, bringing the cultures and traditions of the three high schools into the new school and careful consideration of the use of the existing school sites after they are closed.

The new school will transform the way secondary education is taught in Whyalla. It will provide students with the facilities and support they need to help them reach their potential and support the town as it continues to prosper.

We will keep families and the broader community informed as planning for the new school takes place. This will be through various ways including school newsletters and the Department for Education website at www.education.sa.gov.au/sites-and-facilities/new-whyalla-school.

Yours sincerely
